Description

Best folding wheelchair scale with handrail; Marsden M-653; portable bariatric scale with hinged rail; Class III wheelchair scale for community nursing.

The Marsden M-653 is a highly versatile, medical-grade weighing solution that combines the stability of a platform scale with advanced portability. Unlike fixed-rail models, the M-653 features a unique hinged handrail that can be folded down when not in use. This makes it the premier choice for multi-site healthcare providers, community nurses, and facilities where the scale must be moved frequently or stored in compact spaces.

As a Class III Approved instrument, it provides the legal accuracy required for medical diagnosis and treatment monitoring, specifically designed for patients who are wheelchair-bound or unsteady on their feet.

Innovative Folding Design for Mobile Clinicians

The M-653 is engineered to solve the “portability vs. support” trade-off found in many medical scales:

  • Hinged Support Rail: The single, robust handrail provides a secure point of contact for patients who prefer to stand but require additional stability. When the weighing session is over, the rail folds flat against the platform.

  • Effortless Manoeuvrability: Integrated with wheels and a heavy-duty handle, the scale can be tilted and pulled along once the handrail is folded, allowing for easy “ward-to-ward” or “car-to-clinic” transport.

  • Ultra-Low Profile Platform: With a height of just 66mm, the platform features shallow incline ramps on both sides, ensuring manual and powered wheelchairs can be rolled on without excessive physical strain on staff.

Clinical Precision & Diagnostic Tools

The M-653 uses a premium digital indicator, turning a simple weighing session into a comprehensive health assessment:

  • High-Capacity Precision: Supports up to 300kg with 100g graduations, providing accurate tracking for a wide demographic, including bariatric patients.

  • Full Numeric Keypad: Clinicians can input patient height directly into the keypad to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI) instantly, displayed on a high-contrast screen.

  • Hold & Tare Functions: The “Hold of Weight” feature stabilizes readings for restless patients. The Tare and Preset Tare functions allow staff to instantly deduct the known weight of a wheelchair, leaving only the patient’s net weight.

Digital Connectivity & Long-Life Power

Designed for the modern paperless ward, the M-653 is ready to integrate with electronic systems:

  • Optional Wireless Modules: This model can be specified with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling weight and BMI data to be transmitted directly to EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems.

  • Market-Leading Battery Performance: Powered by an internal rechargeable battery pack, the M-653 provides up to 55 hours of continuous use (approximately 3,000 weigh-ins). It can also be powered by 6 x AA batteries for up to 180 hours of use.

  • Long-Term Reliability: The M-653 is built for years of regular use in high-traffic environments and is backed by a robust manufacturer’s warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for answers to frequently asked questions.

A calibration certificate proves the accuracy of your weighing equipment. It is very likely that if accuracy matters in your workplace, certification will be required by your industry regulators. They are straightforward to get hold of though. Just ask our team.

If you are trading or transacting anything by weight, you will probably need to demonstrate your weighing equipment is verified for trade use. This gives your customers confidence in your business and will make sure buying and selling run smoothly. We can help get you with relevant approvals for your equipment.

The answer will vary depending on how your equipment is used. As a minimum, we typically recommend once a year but our team can provide advice based on your individual circumstances.

The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) has established standards for the classification of calibration test weights. Varying from E0 & E1, which are the most accurate to M2 which are commonly used for calibrating platform scales, floor scales and other industrial weighing instruments.

As a rough guide we have listed desired accuracy against class below.

+/- 0.1% – UNclassed Proof Load Test Weights
+/- 0.05% – M3 (Check/calibrate coarse scales)
+/- 0.005% – M1 (Check/calibrate standard scales)
+/- 0.0015% – F2 (Check/calibrate portable balances)
+/- 0.0005% – F1 (Check/calibrate precision balances)
+/- 0.00015% – E2 (Check/calibrate analytical balances)

The choice of weight class depends on the intended use and the level of accuracy required for a particular application. If you’re unsure, talk to our team who can advise you on the right class for your equipment.

If you’re sending a scale back to us for recalibration, it is ideal to use the original packaging. If this is not available choose a sturdy well-padded box to avoid shocks. Where possible, protect the load sensor by removing the weighing pan and any under-pan support and pack these separately in the box. You may be able to use the equipment’s locking pins or screws too.

Do ensure all the paperwork, including your contact details, is included to ensure we can return it once calibration is complete.
